School Trips at Pembroke-Castle

Many schools visit Pembroke Castle each year. Without exception, all parties are delighted with the guided tours and pupil participation. Each tour is adapted to the needs of groups of varying ages and abilities.

Why is this venue great for School Trips and Educational Visits?

The castle and its underground cavern, provide opportunities for pupils to search for primary sources of evidence, to help prove how the use of the site has changed since the Middle Stone Age.

There are tableaux depicting mediaeval life within Pembroke Castle including copies of costumes, furniture, tableware, wall hangings and other artefacts found locally. Displays interpreting the history of the site from other periods are also to be found amongst its many complete towers.

As the birthplace of Henry VII, Pembroke can be seen as a pivotal place in history. Henry was the founder of the Tudor dynasty, and the Crown of England has remained ever since in the line of his heirs.

Our knowledgeable guides offer groups a chance to explore with them this once magnificent home to the Earls of Pembroke, through Mediaeval, Tudor and Cromwellian times to the present day.

The story is told through the actions of people who lived in the castle from earliest times. The young upils themselves, prompted by the guides, and in various historical roles, relate many of the events that took place over 600 years.

Trained First Aiders on site.

Do you offer access for visitors with disabilities?

There is a setting-down point at the entrance and public parking close-by with disabled spaces. Wheelchair users with assistance and those with limited mobility will be able to access the site at ground floor level where there are information panels and benches provided, including a picnic area. A portable ramp is always offered to aid access into the gift shop

From 9.30am- 6.00pm, dependant on time of year.

"Admittedly taking a group of ten year old boys on a guided tour of a castle is unlikely to fail, but Pembroke Castle isn't just the pile of rubble you find at some castles. They have got a series of displays which tell the story of the castle and what it was like for the people living there and they are written to be understandable to children as well as adults - a nice touch. It is also worth making time to look in Pembroke town itself to see how the castle fits into the landscape."
